Giving love with Misión México
Imagine quitting your day job tomorrow and moving to a developing country to care for those less fortunate than you. That’s what Australian couple, Pamela and Alan Skuse, did back in 2000 to head to Tapachula, Mexico, where they have since been helping turn around the lives of children from backgrounds of extreme poverty and abuse.
In present day, Alan and Pam run the Misiòn Mexico refuge, which resembles a family home rather than an institution. In this loving and secure environment, 40-50 children in their care receive an education, something which many of them have not been exposed to previously.
Pam and Alan also teach the kids how to surf, a precious cultural exchange between Australia and Mexico, which helps bring confidence and joy into the lives of these children who have seen unspeakable violence and neglect.
the joy of riding waves has inspired these kids to dream big
When GYG first learned about Misiòn Mexico in 2007, we were only too happy to get involved with this Australian-run charity and help make a difference in these kids’ lives. Since then, we have helped raise funds every year for Misiòn Mexico, so that Pam and Alan can give the children in their care love, life, hope, and vital life skills.
We’re committed to giving back to the culture that has given us so much, so each time we open a new GYG restaurant, we invite our customers to make gold coin donations on Free Burrito Day to help Misiòn Mexico look after their kids. In addition, customers can donate funds at our restaurant through the donation boxes you’ll find in store.
